Past Resident Conductor - Mr. Luk Hoi Yui
Mr. Luk Hoi Yui graduated from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 1960, after which he took up the as the Teacher of Horn in the same institution. he first joined the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra in 1960 as the Second Horn Player and subsequently promoted to the Principal Horn Player.
After a stint as a lecturer in Brass at the Hong Kong Baptist College, Mr Luk joined the Singapore Symphony Orchestra as Sub-Principal Horn Player and later became the Acting Principal Horn Player.
In 1980, he was appointed as the Music Director of the National Theatre Symphony Band (NTSB), now known as the Singapore Wind Symphony (SWS). He successfully led SWS to several international honours, including the 1st Prize with Distinction in the 2nd Division of the 12th World Music Contest (WMC) held in Kerkrade, the Netherlands, and the 1st Prize at the Janitsjarfestivalen held in Hamar, Norway. He is also the resident conductor of Nanyang Technological University Symphonic Band (NTUSB) from 1985 to 2005, and under his guidance the band won the 1st Prize in the 2nd Division and 1st Prize in the 1st Division of the 13th and 14th World Music Contest held on 1997 and 2001 respectively.
Mr. Luk has also been the resident condustor of Nanyang Polytechnic Wind Orchestra (NYPWO) since 2000. He had also brought the band to overseas musical exchange and competition. During 2004, NYPWO went to Australia to participate in the 15th Australian International Music Festival with the help of Mr. Luk. Mid term of last year, Mr. Luk proudly brought NYPWO to Kerkrade, the Netherlands for the 15th World Music Contest, where NYPWO clinched a 1st Prize in the 2nd Division.
Being an inspiring and encouraging teacher, Mr. Luk is well respected and is known as "lao shi" to all members.
